President Donald Trump swooped through Los Angeles for a rare visit to the heavily Democratic region on Tuesday, Feb. 18, his agenda topped by formally signing off on the 2028 LA Olympics and fund-raising at a posh Beverly Hills hotel.
Trump’s four-hour trek to the Montage Beverly Hills was topped by a meeting with organizers of the 2028 games, including Casey Wasserman, who led LA’s successful bid to snag the mammoth two-week gathering of the world’s greatest athletes. The event is fueled by a $6.9 billion budget.

Trump signed a document that confirmed that the 2028 Games — set to take place at venues throughout the Los Angeles area, including Long Beach, Pasadena, Anaheim, Santa Monica, Carson, Inglewood, San Dimas and other communities — had the federal government’s complete backing.
In addition to financing security costs for the games, designated as a National Security Special Event, the federal government will make contributions to help pay for transportation support, telecommunications and environmental costs.

The official signing was followed by a briefing by Wasserman and Sarah Hirshland, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee CEO, on plans for the 2028 games as well as the 2020 Olympics later this summer in Tokyo.
The briefing was also attended by acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Trump advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina).
“Great to be with @POTUS in California today to meet with the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee. LA is a vibrant city and will host a world-class games in 2028. DHS looks forward to making it safe and secure,” Wolf tweeted.
“I hope you remember me in 2028. You promise, Casey?” the president jovially asked 2028 committee chairman Wasserman, according to a White House pool report. The chairman agreed, the report said.
After the Olympics meeting, Trump planned a private chat with supporters and a fund-raising event.

The president arrived at LAX aboard Air Force One about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and was greeted by a cheering, fist-pumping throng of about 100 people.
Accompanied by Graham and Rep. Kevin McCarthy, two GOP stalwarts who played major roles in maintaining party unity during the president’s impeachment trial, Trump was greeted on the tarmac by local mayors Harry Sidhu of Anaheim and Rex Parris of Lancaster .
After days of bitter, partisan impeachment showdowns in the House and Senate, the president was acquitted, largely along party lines, on Feb. 6. In the days after the standoff, Trump responded by ratcheting up campaign activity. Pro-Trump groups had raised a combined $60 million in January, shattering fundraising records.
People in the LAX crowd shared the same kind of post-impeachment ebullience that the president has displayed since his State of the Union address two weeks ago.
“I’m hoping people start coming together and do what’s right for the country, after the impeachment mess,” Parris said. He added that he believes Trump has been good for the Lancaster area, particularly in his efforts to buoy military jobs — like those at nearby Edwards Air Force Base.
After about 20 minutes of chatting with and signing autographs, the president and his crew climbed into Marine One for a helicopter ride to Santa Monica. From there, a motorcade carried the group to Beverly Hills.
The roads along the route to the hotel featured scattered supporters and protesters alike. Signs along the route ranged from “USA USA USA” and “Four more years” to “LOCK HIM UP,” according to pool reports from journalists who accompanied the president.

Amid Trump’s high spirits, tension between the president and LA leaders endured. Trump has spent little time in the area during his administration, compared to his Democratic predecessor and various presidential hopefuls. He has often sparred with LA and California leaders over immigrant-friendly “sanctuary” policies, while also blaming Democratic philosophies for LA’s homelessness and housing-affordability issues.
Trump continued that tone Tuesday, lashing out at Mayor Eric Garcetti on Twitter.
Garcetti and LAPD Chief Michel Moore posted a video online last week in response to news that elite U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers were being dispatched to cities with sanctuary policies, including LA.
The video provides tips for immigrants on how to respond if federal agents show up at their homes, stressing that they do not need to open their doors unless the agents have a signed warrant. It also urges immigrants to speak to a lawyer before signing any document and to call the city’s 311 information line to learn about available legal services.
“The mayor’s efforts to shield illegal aliens endangers the lives of the public and law enforcement who have to go into the field to apprehend those released,” Trump tweeted Tuesday. “He shouldn’t be urging illegals to beat the system, he should be urging them to safely turn themselves in.”
On the video, Garcetti and Moore stressed that the city is not cooperating with federal authorities on immigration issues.
Regardless of your immigration status, I want every Angeleno to know your city is on your side. Here in Los Angeles, our police department does not coordinate with ICE or participate in immigration enforcement.

“We believe that Los Angeles and the United States are places where every family should remain together, where everyone should feel safe and where everybody belongs,” Garcetti said.
Trump also rekindled his criticism the city’s leadership for failing to resolve its homelessness epidemic. The president said if Los Angeles doesn’t “clean it up fast,” he will intervene.
“If they can’t do it themselves, we’re going to do it,” Trump said. “The federal government is going to take it over, we’re going to do it.”

Trump’s whirlwind trek to LA is part of three-day, four-state swing to Western states as those regions gear up for Super Tuesday — March 3. With its new, earlier primary, California is expected to play a key role in determining which Democrat will face Trump in November.
On Wednesday, Trump will visit Rancho Mirage in Riverside County for a fundraising golf outing and reception hosted by Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison before flying to Phoenix for a campaign rally then back to Las Vegas.
According to an event invitation, first obtained by The Desert Sun, tickets for Trump’s appearance in Rancho Mirage range from $100,000 for a photo opportunity and golf outing for two, up to $250,000 for a roundtable discussion, photo opportunity and golf outing for two.
Also on Wednesday, Trump will join McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, at an unconfirmed location in the city to speak to Central Valley farmers. Topics will reportedly include efforts to improve the supply and delivery of water in California and other Western states, according to the Bakersfield Californian.
Trump will visit also Las Vegas, where he’s set to speak at a graduation ceremony for prisoners, and will host two of his trademark campaign rallies in Phoenix and Colorado Springs, buoying support for two vulnerable Republican senators — Cory Gardner of Colorado and Martha McSally of Arizona. Both stood by Trump during the Senate’s impeachment trial.
