NFL Draft 2020: How Jets can still get elite edge rusher, though they have no shot at Chase Young | But will - NJ.com

The Jets are perpetually weak at edge rusher. It’s a need for them essentially every offseason.

They’re not going to get the best edge rusher in the 2020 NFL Draft — Ohio State’s Chase Young — unless they foolishly trade way up from No. 11. But they can still get an elite edge rusher.

Or that’s the opinion, at least, of NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah.

The two non-Young options for the Jets at No. 11 — LSU’s K’Lavon Chaisson and Iowa’s A.J. Epenesa.

In Jeremiah’s first mock draft, he sent Chaisson to the Jets and Epenesa to the Falcons at No. 16. But Jeremiah thinks Epenesa could go higher, depending on his pre-draft testing.

With the NFL Scouting Combine coming up next week, Chaisson and Epenesa both have a chance to boost their draft stock, and cement themselves as the No. 2 edge rusher available this year.

“[Epenesa] is a skilled, skilled rusher,” Jeremiah said Friday during a conference call with reporters. "I didn’t really see bad tape on him. He’s not real, real explosive when you watch him coming off the edge. He’s big and powerful. He’s got great hands. He can flip his hips and finish. He’s got a variety of hand moves.

“The guy has got a high floor. You’re not going to miss on A.J. Epenesa. Now, whether or not you’re going to get a 14-sack guy or an eight- or nine-sack guy, I think that’s the debate. I think he’s absolutely in the mix for being in the top half of the first round, because he plays a premier position and he’s a really good football player.”

Epenesa had 11.5 and 10.5 sacks the past two seasons, compared to 6.5 and one for Chaisson, whom Jeremiah likes a little better at this point. (And it’s still early.)

The two edge rushers are built very differently, too, so their combine measurements will be intriguing to watch. Epenesa is currently (and unofficially) listed at 6-foot-6 and 280 pounds, while Chaisson is 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, but could be smaller than that.

Jeremiah said Chaisson “is an explosive edge rusher, and got better as the season went along. I’ve heard he played in the high 230s. I’ve heard he could be in the low 250s now. So how big he is could go a long way in helping him.”

However you slice it, Jets must improve their sack production in 2020. They did improve overall on defense in 2019, when their DVOA rating was 10th, compared to 21st in 2018. But they were 26th in sack percentage last season, compared to 24th in 2018.
