NFL Draft has fallen divinely for Dallas Cowboys though three rounds - Times Record News

The NFL Draft isn’t supposed to be this easy.

It’s supposed to take creative trades to maneuver around a draft board and land players you covet.

Even the New England Patriots are trading up in this year’s draft to secure the likes of Michigan edge rusher Joshua Uche and UCLA tight end Devin Asiasi. Those names probably don’t move the needle much for casual fans.

The Dallas Cowboys have stood pat. No trades. No movement. They’ve held on to each pick and taken the best player on their board.

After having Oklahoma receiver CeeDee Lamb fall into their lap at No. 17 overall in Thursday’s first round, the Cowboys received two more gifts in the second and third rounds. Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs had a first-round grade from the Cowboys and several other teams. Dallas got him with the 51st overall selection.

Thirty-one picks later, the Cowboys chose Oklahoma defensive tackle Neville Gallimore, who was considered by many to be one of the top 50 players in the draft. He was the 82nd player selected.

The fact that all three picks resulted in astronomical perceived value while also filling team needs is hard to explain.

Divine intervention, maybe?

“When I look at how we got here,” Jerry Jones said, “we’re living right. It fell right for us these first two days.”

Cornerback was this team’s greatest need. Byron Jones is now the highest-paid player at the position with the Miami Dolphins. Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis and Anthony Brown projected as the three starters heading into Friday. All three are free agents after this season, and the Cowboys can’t be certain they want to bring any of them back.

Many fans and media members were angling for the Cowboys to take the best cornerback available at No. 51 regardless of who else was available. It just so happened Diggs was the top guy on their board – a player they might have considered at No. 17 overall if Lamb hadn’t been available.

Jones said the team thought there was roughly a 1 percent chance of Diggs being available at No. 51.

And they almost chose Gallimore instead.

“It was a tough decision between Diggs and Gallimore,” Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said about the 51st pick. “They were both right there.”

Gallimore joins a retooled defensive line that includes free-agent signees Gerald McCoy – another former Sooner – and Dontari Poe. It’s another indication of a philosophy change in defensive scheme and further brings to question how holdovers Tyrone Crawford and Trysten Hill fit in the new regime’s plan.

There are still glaring needs for this team. Safety, edge rusher and interior offensive line lead the charge. But the Cowboys shouldn’t be dinged for not addressing those spots based on the value they’re obtaining with each pick.

Dallas has four picks in the final four rounds Saturday, including one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh. The Cowboys have said they intend to continue drafting their board and not reaching for positional needs.

That’s fine. If the last day goes like the first two, needs will be met. And at a premium value.
