HOOPERS ISLAND, MD - The well-known W T Ruark & Co building, once a bustling crab processing facility with roots dating back to its founding in 1948, is now on the market for public online auction. Despite its closure in recent years, the property holds a significant place in the hearts of locals, embodying the island's rich history.
Darlene Ruark, the granddaughter of the founder, reflects on the building's legacy, "Its been there since 1948, its always been I call it an icon or a landmark I would say."
The facility faced challenges due to the state's lottery system. Crab processing facilities must apply to a lottery to receive H-2B visa workers. Unfortunately, W.T. Ruark lost out on the lottery one too many times, leading to a closure.
Kelly Ellis-Neal, the current owner of the property and a family friend of the Ruarks, had envisioned transforming the building into an interactive watermen's museum. However, personal matters have compelled them to put the property on the market.
"It is a hard and sad day for all of our families, but we hope that whoever purchases it will keep in mind the necessity of preserving the history of this building," expresses Neal.
Local sentiment echoes the desire to see the property retain its historical significance. Melinda Perry, owner of Old Salty's restaurant across the road, hopes for the building to continue its legacy as a working factory, despite the challenges posed by the shortage of workers.
"I hope it keeps with the history of the island and stays a factory. It's what Hoopers Island is known for, and that's what we need," says Perry.
David Foote, a Hoopers Island homeowner, shares a similar sentiment, expressing the hope that the new owners will contribute to the community's prosperity by creating jobs.
The online auction for the property commenced with an opening bid of $175,000, and interested parties have until January 17th at 2 pm to participate. As the fate of this historic building hangs in the balance, the community remains optimistic about the potential for a new chapter that honors its storied past.
