Shortly after launching his campaign for the U.S. Senate last year, Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) received the endorsement of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) – but today, one of the union’s New Jersey branches decided to go in a different direction.
IFPTE Local 194, which represents around 1,000 New Jersey Turnpike employees, has announced its endorsement of First Lady Tammy Murphy, instead of Kim, for the Senate seat currently held by indicted Senator Bob Menendez.
“Tammy Murphy is a passionate advocate for women and men in the labor movement and understands the values of our hardworking families,” IFPTE Local 194 President Barry Kushnir said in a statement. “Local 194 is confident that Tammy will continue to partner with us and our union sisters and brothers by supporting pro-worker legislation that supports union organizing, protects retirement benefits and advocates for fair wages when she is in the U.S. Senate.”
The split endorsement between the union’s international and local arms is unusual, and adds another labor endorsement to Murphy’s pile. It’s not the only IFPTE branch in New Jersey, though; the IFPTE’s website lists no fewer than 12 other locals that represent members in New Jersey.
Murphy has received one other labor endorsement so far, from the Eastern Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters. Kim, meanwhile, has the support of both the national and local branches of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
