Will your Schengen visa arrive in time? These are the current processing times - Condé Nast Traveller India

Making that trip to Europe happen can be tough this summer: you could have everything planned and booked, and the visa could take forever to process. With month-long appointment wait times and even longer processing timelines, Schengen visas are getting more and more unpredictable to get. If you’re planning a trip right now, here’s a lowdown of long it could take right now:

Getting appointments

Getting a visa appointment is tricky right now. When we checked the visa service provider BLS International’s website on 31 May, Spain was completely booked out for June in most metro cities. The company has been receiving over 10,000 applications a month for Spain since March, which is why despite faster processing, there are no slots left for new entries. The earliest appointment for a French visa at the New Delhi embassy is on 27 June. Italy has no slots available in New Delhi, while in Mumbai and Bengaluru, slots are available in October. Germany, too, is out of slots, so while the country’s rejection rates are low, getting through is a concern. Switzerland, on the other hand, has slots available for June in most major metro cities.

Visa processing time

If you already have an appointment for a Spanish visa, you’re lucky. Spain is processing visas at the fastest rate right now, says Nihal Daswani, co-founder of EASA, a company that provides end-to-end visa solutions. Expect your visa to arrive in one to three business days. France is next in line, processing applications in two to five business days.

But for some countries, you could end up  waiting for as long as six weeks to get a visa to a Schengen country; that is the timeline given by Norway this month. Due to a surge in applications, the processing for this country is by far the slowest, taking up to 45 days from the time an application reaches the Embassy in New Delhi. The situation is similar for Greece, with visas taking anywhere between 15 to 45 days to process. Countries like Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Portugal, Hungary and Finland are currently processing applications within 15 working days, says Rajeev Kale, President & Country Head, Holidays, MICE, Visa - Thomas Cook (India) Limited.
