SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — Metrolink commuter rail service and Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner will resume operation through San Clemente on Monday, July 17, Metrolink and the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency have announced.

The announcement comes a day after the board of directors of the Orange County Transportation Authority, which has been overseeing work at a landslide along the Surf Line in San Clemente, was told that a protective wall was nearing completion [see “Progress on wall …,” Trains News Wire, July 11, 2023].

Surfliner service will return to 10 daily round trips between Los Angeles and San Diego after being cut to just three daily round trips during the service interruption requiring a bus bridge. More information is available at the Surfliner website; revised schedules reflecting the resumption of full service are not yet posted.

Updated Metrolink train information will be available here.

The current service disruption, because of a landslide behind the Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, began June 5. It is the latest in a series of slide-related issues at two sites in San Clemente that have plagued Surfliner and Metrolink service since Sept. 30, 2022. Since that time, trains have operated on normal schedules just 41 says.

A 250-foot-long, 12-foot high wall, with piles 32 feet deep, has been constructed next to the tracks to provide protection in the slide area.
