ROCKPORT, W.Va. (WTAP) - With the holiday season upon everyone and the pandemic still happening, it’s a difficult time for those who are suffering from food insecurity.

One meat processing plant in Rockport is helping those with this issue.

Slider’s Processing and Smoked Meats is a licensed plant that is in association with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and their campaign, “Hungers Helping the Hungry.”

This program involves them receiving donations from hunters during deer hunting season, in which they grind, package and freeze the meat. A food bank takes the venison to those that need it after.

Slider’s says that the involvement in this program is necessary.

“We’re supposed to help one another,” Slider’s Processing owner, Lyle Shawn Slider. “And this enables us to do that. To see that the meat is not wasted. There’s an avenue to help families who are in need, whatever the reason being that they need the meat. It’s not going to waste.”

Hunters are more than welcome to come to Slider’s and donate their deer carcass.

You will need to follow the guidelines laid out on their drop-off procedure board.
