Hayward sign-and-trade generates large trade exception for Celtics - Boston Herald

Trade exceptions often lead to more pie-in-the-sky dreaming than anything tangible, but the Celtics secured something big enough in exchange for Gordon Hayward Sunday to keep their fandom thinking big.

Though Hayward was the third major free agent in two years to leave the Celtics, unlike in the cases of Kyrie Irving and Al Horford, this time the Celtics received something back in the form of a large trade exception. The exception is equal to the first year of Hayward’s four-year, $120 million contract with Charlotte, estimated to be worth somewhere north of $25 million. The Celtics have until the start of 2021 free agency to use it, and in exchange sent two future second-round picks to the Hornets. ESPN’s Bobby Marks called it the largest trade exception in NBA history.

The exception can be broken up or used as a whole — the larger exceptions, in particular, tend to be used at the trade deadline and in free agency for sign-and-trade possibilities. As a sign of the Celtics’ inability to put together a trade since the start of 2020 free agency, they did not immediately turn around and apply it to a deal Sunday.

The Celtics are also unlikely to benefit from the full amount of the Hayward exception, since their impending signings of Tristan Thompson and Jeff Teague are expected to hard-cap the team at $138 million.

Both players are on schedule to sign prior to Tuesday’s start of training camp, with Thompson agreeing to come aboard for the full $9.3 non-taxpayer midlevel exception, and Teague for the $3.6 million bi-annual exception.

The Celtics also secured small trade exceptions from the trades of Enes Kanter to Portland and Vincent Poirier to Oklahoma City. They are not allowed to combine any of their three exceptions, and are unlikely to use every tool or dollar in this collection.

Most trade exceptions expire due to the rarity of finding a trade partner willing to part with a valuable player in exchange for cap relief.

That said, Golden State, in need of help following Klay Thompson’s season-ending Achilles injury, used a $17 million trade exception to trade for Kelly Oubre last week.

The Celtics last used a large exception ($10 million from the swap of Paul Pierce for Keith Bogans in 2013 as part of a larger, infamous deal with Brooklyn) just prior to the 2015 trade deadline, when they sent Marcus Thornton and Cleveland’s 2016 first round pick to Phoenix for Isaiah Thomas.

Thomas’ legendary if brief ride with the Celtics considered, trade exceptions can make an enormous difference — especially at the trade deadline, when bigger, more expensive names tend to become available.
