Though Cam Newton has Patriots starting QB gig all but locked up, Jarrett Stidham still feels he’s competing - MassLive.com

FOXBOROUGH — It was only week ago that the three veteran quarterbacks on the Patriots roster were splitting reps evenly.

In the days since, Jarrett Stidham’s hip started barking, Brian Hoyer looked pedestrian, and Cam Newton surged past his two counterparts. There’s little doubt it’s Newton’s gig now, but it would’ve been curious to see how the competition played out if Stidham had stayed healthy.

On a video conference call Thursday afternoon, the second-year quarterback was asked if there was any disappointment in the injury that derailed his training camp.

“I think as a football player, as a competitor, everybody wants to be out on the field every single day,” Stidham said. “For me, that’s what I always wanted to do. Like I said, there are things that happen, and you kind of have to roll with the punches and you have to get better – whether that’s physically, mentally, whatever facet that may be. So like I said, I’m happy to be back out on the field playing with my teammates, and trying to get better every day.”

Does he still feel like he’s competing for the starting gig?

“How I view things is every day is a competition,” Stidham said. “Whether I’m first string, second string, third string, fourth string, fifth string, I don’t view it as that. I just view it as a great opportunity to get better with my teammates every single day and to compete really hard. I look at it as competing against myself, too, and trying to learn and grow every single day, to help myself get better each and every day I go out there on the field.”

No matter what his role, Stidham said his eyes are still simply set on steady improvement.

“My goal has always stayed the same,” he explained. “Whether that be here at the end of training camp kind of leading into the season, or whether it be throughout the season, whatever it may be, is really just to learn and get better. I’m only in my second year. There’s a ton of room for me to grow. A lot of room to improve and learn in a lot of different areas. That’s kind of my big thing. I just want to continue to learn from the guys in the quarterback room, whether it be Cam, or Hoy, or Jedd [Fisch], or Josh [McDaniels], or whoever it may be – just continue to learn from those guys and really try to help myself get better and really excel on the field every day.”
