Detroit Tigers: C.J. Cron should be re-signed even though he is injured - Detroit Jock CIty

The Detroit Tigers should reward C.J. Cron with a second chance and re-sign him for another season.

News about C.J. Cron was not great; when it was determiner that the Detroit Tigers were losing him for the year, it sucked. However, Cron’s reaction to the injury was pretty high-quality and may be expected from someone on a one-year deal.

Cron talked about how he was crushed by the injury being at such an inconvenient time but also spoke about the group of guys the Tigers are putting together. Given Cron’s hot start, and veteran level, it seems that he could be a valuable piece to a young group of players.

While a knee injury has Cron on the sidelines for the rest of the 2020 season, it does not mean that his contract status changes. When the fall rolls around, General Manager (GM) Al Avila and his staff are going to have to comb through the contracts and decide whether to bring him back.

Though he may have missed an extended period here in the 2020 season, Cron deserves a second chance.

The Tigers organization should renew/extend Cron for another year and see what he brings to the table during the 2021 season.

In 2020, Cron was able to log thirteen games before he would hit the Injured List (IL) and have his season ended, which is just under a quarter of the 60-game COVID-19 shortened season.

Cron would total 42 at-bats where he hit .190/.346/.548 with four home runs and eight RBI for the Tigers.

Cron was on fire during 2020 Tigers Summer Camp, it translated into the beginning of the season, though the .190 average is nothing to write home about, seven of eight hits that Cron had, went for extra bases.

This past offseason, the Tigers brought in Cron on a one-year contract worth $6.1 million, which was the same contract given to Jonathan Schoop, who could get moved at the 2020 trade deadline.

With the positives that Cron could bring to the table for the Tigers, what is the harm in floating another one-year deal his way? Cron’s success at the plate in driving the ball, his ability on the field, and mentoring leadership for the younger players in the clubhouse could be vital.

Amid the Tigers rebuild, which just saw two prospect pitchers (Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal) make their debuts, Cron can be a leader for the hitting prospects as they start to poke through from the minor leagues.

The Detroit Tigers have some decisions to make, but re-signing C.J. Cron should be a no-brainer based on what he has shown on and off the field during his time with the organization.
