SPIRITWOOD, N.D. — The state’s first dedicated soybean processing facility at Spiritwood will provide a year-round local destination for the region's soybean production, according to Mike Keller, president of Green Bison Soy Processing LLC.

The first load of soybeans was brought to the Green Bison Soy Processing facility on Sept. 18, Keller said in an email.

“We’re excited for production at the Spiritwood facility continuing on schedule throughout the harvest of 2023 and look forward to working with Marathon (Petroleum Co.) to support sustainable solutions,” he said.

Green Bison Soy Processing is a 75%-25% venture between ADM and Marathon Petroleum Corp., respectively.

The $350 million soybean processing facility is located in the Spiritwood Energy Park Association industrial park about 10 miles east of Jamestown. It is located near the Spiritwood Station electrical and steam generation plant and the Dakota Spirit AgEnergy Ethanol plant.

Green Bison Soy Processing is expected to process 150,000 bushels of soybeans per day into oil, meal and fiber. Green Bison Soy Processing is expected to produce approximately 600 million pounds of refined vegetable oil annually that will be supplied exclusively to Marathon as a feedstock for renewable diesel.

Keller said ADM has been doing business with Marathon for many years and both companies have the expertise, scale and capabilities to take a full-value chain approach to sustainable fuels. He said Marathon’s renewable diesel facility is in a geographically advantageous location to the Green Bison facility in Spiritwood.

“A partnership with MPC (Marathon Petroleum Corp.) makes commercial sense from an oil offtake perspective,” he said. “And maybe most importantly, we found we could go beyond just being an oil supplier-customer to partnering with each other to help address the world’s sustainable energy needs. The partnership between ADM and MPC remains critical to advancing each of the organizations’ strategies while creating supply chain efficiencies and providing a high-quality competitive product to the end consumer.”

The Green Bison Soy Processing facility represents another step in Marathon Petroleum’s commitment to invest in a sustainable, energy-diverse future, said Melissa Ory, Marathon spokesperson, in an email.

“The facility will help us further optimize our renewable feedstock sourcing, and we are excited about the opportunity to partner with ADM,” she said.

Ory said the renewable diesel produced at Marathon’s facility in Dickinson is predominantly sold on the West Coast with some sold locally in North Dakota.

The Green Bison facility currently employs about 75 people.

Corry Shevlin, CEO of the Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corp., said the Green Bison facility is providing provide good jobs and is another place where farmers can take their soybeans.
