The United States Postal Service says it is ready for the holiday rush that is coming this year.
The Bethpage processing facility for the USPS even has a new machine that can process packages a lot quicker.
“We sort about 3,500 packages an hour on this, up to 55,000 a day and it’s going to help us out come Christmastime,” says Michael Calabrese, acting Bethpage plant manager.
He says the entire facility will be doing upward of 500,000 packages a day during the holidays.
Steve Humin, senior processing director for the USPS New York Metro Division, says that the Postal Service has purchased 138 machines across the country, and many are housed in New York in anticipation of the peak season and growth of the delivery services.
The USPS also has a 10-year plan to hire and recruit more people.
