After the Mets and Billy Beane decided not to consummate their flirtation, the team took a moment to regroup. But now their search for a new executive continues apace.

For example, a league source said that Steve Cohen last week interviewed San Francisco Giants general manager Scott Harris.

Neither Cohen nor Harris would confirm this conversation, but people familiar with the situation do not believe that Harris will be leaving the Giants for the Mets. We can probably now cross him off the list.

We can do the same for Los Angeles Dodgers executive Brandon Gomes. As SNY reported, he caught the Mets’ attention but has always seemed unlikely to leave his current job.

Every one of these meetings that does not result in a hire creates a perception that the team is striking out in its search.

For that reason, the Mets are trying to keep this stage of their search out of the public eye, in contrast to the Beane/David Stearns/Theo Epstein phase.

But league sources help us to fill in a picture of what the team has been up to over the past week: Researching young GMs and assistant GMs from many clubs, asking permission to speak with them and exploring potential fits.

We’re hearing word of the Mets doing due diligence on a ton of candidates, most of whom are not names familiar to the public. It’s entirely possible that Harris was not the only interview last week.

There are also one or two internal candidates for the job, according to sources (though despite industry speculation, one is definitely not assistant GM Bryn Alderson, Sandy Alderson’s son).

As SNY has reported, former Astros GM Jeff Luhnow is not under consideration. It is extremely hard to imagine Cohen and Alderson reaching out to former Giants architect Brian Sabean.

Everything we have gathered about the Mets’ search is that they are vetting younger execs, and might hire a general manager, rather than a president of baseball operations.

If they want to bring another team’s GM aboard, they could still offer a president title — a technicality of title inflation designed to subvert the game’s rules about obtaining permission to speak to employees under contract elsewhere.

No hire is imminent, according to sources — but the team is moving through the process, despite the lack of noise.
