Murphy lands role at Democratic convention even though he won’t be in Milwaukee - NJ.com

Gov. Phil Murphy, who chairs the Democratic Governors Association, was named a co-chair of the Democratic National Convention even though he won’t be in the city where it’s taking place.

Murphy was the only governor and only New Jerseyan named to a convention leadership position Monday.

He joined two potential vice-presidential candidates, U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, as well as U.S. Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Rep. Tony Cardenas of California as co-chairs.

Murphy’s role as a co-chair will be to work with the national party and presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign “to ensure that the convention runs smoothly, represent the event to media outlets and act as a lead surrogate to help deliver the party’s message,” said Philip Swibinski, a spokesman for the New Jersey Democratic State Committee.

Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, was named chair.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the convention first was postponed to August from July. Now it largely will take place remotely rather than in the host city, with delegates told to stay home, and Murphy said Monday he won’t be going to Milwaukee.

“I’m not going to Milwaukee,” he said. “I can say that definitively, at least as of everything I know right now.”

Besides being a place for state Democrats to gather every four years, the national convention serves as a chance for the party to showcase its strongest 2020 candidates and its rising stars.

The last two Democratic presidents, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, first gained national attention at a convention, and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., brought delegates to their feet four years ago when he addressed the delegates.

But little of that will take place this year.

Here’s the slimmed down schedule:

Monday, Aug. 17:

Opening ceremonies

Committee reports (credentials, rules and platform)

Select speakers

Tuesday. Aug. 18:

Keynote address

Nominating and seconding speeches for presidential nomination

Roll call vote for president

Wednesday, Aug. 19:

Nomination of vice president

Vice presidential nominee’s acceptance speech

Thursday, Aug. 20:

Presidential nominee’s acceptance speech
