ELYRIA, Ohio – The numbers are in. The annual Ice Cream Social fundraiser of the Lorain County Historical Society (LCHS) was another hit, even though the pandemic forced the organization to restructure the event as a drive-thru.
“We sold nearly 600 ($5) tickets,” said Executive Director Kerri Broome, “which is in the ballpark of our usual sales for the event and we even had a greater number of sponsors than in 2019. This generous support is especially meaningful since LCHS has not been able to hold in-person educational programs and events since the beginning of March.
“We are also grateful to Lorain County Public Health, who helped us figure out a way to hold the Ice Cream Social while adhering to the health and safety guidelines set forth by the State of Ohio.”
Ticket holders at the July 12 event stayed in their cars and were served safely while inside their vehicles. Each ticket holder received a slice of pie with ice cream to go.
“Although we missed hearing the sounds of jazz played by Solid Brass,” Broome said, “seeing the beautiful antique cars on the lawn and visiting with friends while enjoying some pie and ice cream, the treat this year was to see so many familiar, friendly faces as they drove through the pick-up line. We missed seeing everyone and are so thankful that we could hold the event this year. It was the 21st Ice Cream Social at The Hickories (an historical mansion in Elyria built in the late 1800s that houses the offices and library of LCHS).”
Broome is optimistic for next year’s Ice Cream Social. “Stay tuned for the 22nd edition in 2021,” she said. “You never know what we will plan next!”
