The words "holiday" and "break" aren't exactly synonymous inside the United States Postal Service Pennwood Processing and Distribution Center in Warrendale."This is our busiest week of the year," said Stephen Tarpey, the plant manager of Pennwood. "It's all hands on deck."Tarpey spoke to Pittsburgh's Action News 4 Tuesday night during some of the busiest hours — on one of the busiest days — of one of the busiest weeks of the year."This begins crunch time," Tarpey said. "We’ll be running strong until 4 o’clock in the morning."As the overnight shift began Tuesday, about 360 workers moved seamlessly throughout the 375,000-square-foot facility, which handles outbound mail.Packages are delivered to the facility by trucks driving from as far East as State College, as far West as Youngstown, Ohio, and as far south as Morgantown, West Virginia.Once the mail is delivered to the inbound dock of the facility, Tarpey said it is then "triaged" in the center of the building, processed on machines, and separated by the destination, and dispatched from the outbound dock."This facility will get upwards of 375,000 to 400,000 packages in a day during our busiest days in the month of December," Tarpey said. When asked if the demand of the holiday season ever feels daunting, Tarpey did not seem phased. "Some days can feel daunting," Tarpey said. "But this is the job we signed up for. This is what we do here."The USPS is currently in the midst of its "Delivering for America" plan, a 10-year plan to "achieve financial sustainability and service excellence."Tarpey said that since the plan was implemented in 2021, his center has gained two more machines."Part of the 'Delivering for America' plan was to make the processing stronger," Tarpey said.During the pandemic, the USPS garnered scrutiny for its leadership under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.
