Jun Kazama is indeed a playable character in Tekken 8 though Katsuhiro Harada wanted to bring her back sooner - EventHubs

Although Jun Kazama had only made 1 canonical appearance in the Tekken series as a playable character up until this point, the impact she's made on the franchise is amongst the largest and most important.

To the delight of fans all over the world, Tekken 8's latest trailer showcased the apparent return of Jun, but it wasn't exactly made clear if she was actually going to be taking part in the roster or just relegated to the game's Story Mode.

Thankfully, longtime Tekken Director Katsuhiro Harada confirmed to IGN that all 8 characters shown off so far are playable, including Jun.

"This has been quite some time since she appeared in this type of capacity in the game being both part of the story and playable hasn't happened since Tekken 2," said Harada via IGN. "Obviously, this time she plays a very important role both to Kazuya and Jin, and I think some of that will actually portrayed when you actually get hands on with the game."

Considering the new game takes place just 6 months after the events of Tekken 7, it looks like we'll be moving the familial battle up a generation, which before focused on Heihachi, Kazumi and Kazuya.

Harada reaffirmed Jun's playable status at the Tekken World Tour 2022 North America Regional Finals and also reminded fans that the character's classification is missing and not confirmed dead. Plus, he also shared some concept art for her new design as well.

Since it's still unknown whether or not Jun is truly alive and in the world of the living, she may end up playing a similar role to her would be mother-in-law, but instead of trying to destroy her bloodline using Akuma, she may well try to save it.

"I think she's centrally more important to Jin Kazama because people who are familiar with the character know he's got this Devil Gene power, and he's kinda typically wavering between his human side and that devil influence side," said Harada.

Harada also claims the developers were planning to add Jun back into the series sooner than now, but the Tekken series' story progression took longer to set in motion and looks different than initially penned.

Jin's protective mom was featured as a playable character in both Tekken Tag Tournament titles, but she hasn't really been a front-facing part of the franchise since all the way back in 1996.

Jun went missing years before the main events of Tekken 3 when she attempted to fight off Ogre while saving Jin and long presumed dead.

So she may finally be back, or she'll remain more of a spiritual guide for his son as he attempts to destroy the man she saw potential in, at least at one point.

"Jun is kinda like his guide on the path that he's on, and people who are familiar with the series and her know that she has this special power with her that she can actually neutralize the Devil Gene and some of its effects," said Harada.

The director wouldn't delve much into how she will play like in Tekken 8, but he does confirm she still uses traditional Kazama style martial arts from earlier in the series.

This also allows for Bandai Namco to potentially further experiment and add to Jin's moveset in the new game too where it seems he and Devil Jin may have melded into 1 fighter.

It's going to be very interesting to see how this all plays out from both a story and gameplay perspective for Tekken moving forward though we've yet to actually see Jun in action again just yet.

Tekken 8 is currently in development for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and you can check out IGN's full interview with Harada and Producer Michael Murray below.
