NASA's in-space Solar Dynamics Observatory captured an image of the sun with irregular black spots, which make it seem as though the bright star is smiling. The image was taken last week and was recently shared by the space agency, prompting people to compare it to all sorts of things, from a jack-o’-lantern, to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from “Ghostbusters,” to the baby-faced “Teletubbies” sun, to a Scrub Daddy sponge.
NASA says the dark areas that are making the sun “smile” are called coronal holes and are considered to be cooler and less dense areas on the sun's surface. They only appear when the sun is imaged in ultraviolet light or certain types of X-ray images, according to the space agency.
