(WGEM) -- A new meat processing facility is in the works just outside the Tri-States and the owner say it will have big local impact.
The owners said they thought for a while that Missouri farmers could benefit from a facility in the area, but the problem was only made worse when the pandemic backed up meat production.
Now the new project will help farmers get cattle processed closer to come and create local jobs.
“For a facility this size where we’re doing around 250 head of cattle per day. We’re doing to need at least 300 employees to make a facility like that run," said Edward Dent, Missouri Beef Producers co-owner.
The new owners added that they are looking at land in both Randolph and Macon Counties, but hope to attract workers from all surrounding counties to fill out their work force.
Missouri Beef Producers said they expect to have land purchased for the project by then end of the spring and will start construction on the facility in the fall.
Construction is expected to take a year and a half, so the facility should be up and running by Spring of 2023.
Joe Kendrick, a Marion County beef producer, said there are added costs of shipping cattle before they’re processed that people may not think about.
He said having a facility within an hour of his farm would streamline the process.
“Having to transport an animal all that way, that’s a lot of added costs. There’s the costs of the transportation and that’s not something small. But there’s also the cost of the cattle losing weight while they travel. That’s more money we’re losing once they finally get them processed.”
Kendrick said having a facility nearby will also help the consumer.
He said having a production facility near the Tri-States will likely mean fresher and less expensive beef on store shelves.
