After each game, Kentucky sends John Calipari (or an assistant) and one or two players out to speak to the media. Even in 2020, this tradition has continued on Zoom. Today, Keion Brooks, who has yet to play in a game this season, was the one to sit down and recap what happened in Kentucky’s 75-63 loss to North Carolina.
When asked why, Brooks said his teammates were upset and he felt it was his responsibility as a leader to step up and speak to reporters.
“Because I’m one of the leaders of our team. My guys didn’t feel like they were up to it. They didn’t want to do it so I’ll take it on. I’m not going to put them out here in this vulnerable situation where emotions are high and you know, you never know what could go on, so I went out here and I’m just defending my teammates.”
John Calipari confirmed that it was Brooks’ call to take the media duties.
“You’re talking about guys that are going through stuff that’s really, really hard for them. To take responsibility, to own their performance, to accept where they are on the team. There’s a lot of stuff. He just said, ‘Look, I’m going to do the media.’ So, I was kind of proud of him that he would step up and face the music and he didn’t even play.”
