Before the Hecktown Oaks hospital was even finished, the Lehigh Valley Health Network took a fresh look and decided it wasn’t quite big enough.

The health network announced Thursday it will add a four-story bed tower to the hospital under construction on Hecktown Road near Route 33 in Lower Nazareth Township.

“Initiating a second phase of construction while we already have crews at the site provides significant savings and is overall more efficient,” Bob Begliomini in a news release. He’s president of Lehigh Valley Hospital–Muhlenberg in Bethlehem and Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hecktown Oaks.

“Having the additional hospital space also provides capacity to meet health care needs of Northampton County residents,” he said.

The 95,000-square-foot addition will have a helipad, although a helicopter will not be based at the site, according to the news release. It will have 30 patient beds, the release says. Three of the floors in the tower are available for future growth, according to the announcement.

The Hecktown Oaks hospital will be 201,000 square feet, a total that includes the addition, health network spokesman Brian Downs said. The initial phase of the hospital includes about 20 beds, Downs said. The hospital includes the 35,000-square-foot Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute, a 61,000-square-foot medical office building and an emergency room that includes an area dedicated for treating children, the news release says.

The main hospital is slated to open in summer 2021. The addition should be ready by fall 2021.

The new hospital will bring Lehigh Valley Health Network care closer to many Northampton County residents. In fiscal year 2019, more than 1,700 of the network’s patients would have been able to receive care closer to home at LVH–Hecktown Oaks compared to the network’s eight other hospitals.

The network includes three hospital campuses in Allentown, one in Bethlehem, one in East Stroudsburg, one in Hazleton and two in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.

Lehigh Valley Health Network on Oct. 20 also announced the resumption of construction on a new hospital in Dickson City, Pennsylvania. Coordinated Health began the 100,578-square-foot hospital project by breaking ground in January 2019 prior to joining LVHN last December. The LVHN Board of Trustees approved the hospital plans last month.
