After two years of delay, a $9.7 billion Alberta refinery is now processing oil sands bitumen as designed, Kallanish Energy has learned.

The Sturgeon Refinery northeast of Edmonton, Alberta, had not been processing bitumen because of delays, caused mainly by equipment failures.

The refinery, in a website update, said it has successfully switched to bitumen feedstock last month in its production of diesel and other fuels, The Canadian Press reported.

Refinery construction was completed in fall of 2017. It was expected to process as much as 80,000 barrels per day of heavy bitumen, starting in early 2018 after starting up with partly upgraded synthetic crude from the oil sands. But it was delayed by equipment failures including its gasifier.

After a maintenance shutdown in late 2019, the refinery was restarted again using synthetic crude feedstock while preparing for the starting up the gasifier, according to The Canadian Press.

The refinery is a joint venture of North West Refining and oil sands producer Canadian Natural Resources. The Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission also provides additional feedstock.
