There are 185 facilities licensed to process industrial and hazardous waste in Texas.

When fire crews helped burn off the toxic vinyl chloride that spilled during a fiery train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, earlier this month, they knew they’d have to do something with the water used to keep the burn under control.

That wastewater and other hazardous waste removed from the derailment site needs to be specially processed so that the material can eventually be disposed of without posing additional harm to people or the environment.

Most of the 1.1 million gallons of contaminated waste are being brought just east of Houston, to the Texas Molecular Deer Park facility. This facility is one of 36 Harris County facilities certified by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to process hazardous waste – more than twice as many as Jefferson County, the next highest with 13.

Matt deGrood and Jen Rice contributed to this reporting.
